Playwrights Progress

A new project, a Playwrights Progress grant, gives support to a 99 Gals cultural friend, Gallery Theater.

To: Yamhill County Playwrights

Gallery’s Readers Theater is providing opportunities for development of new plays for Yamhill County writers. The Readers Theater Group, an ongoing project of McMinnville’s Gallery Theater, has received a $1,200 impact grant from 99 Gals, a private Yamhill County foundation.

The grant is specifically to support Playwrights Progress, an effort to encourage development of original plays and musical theater by Yamhill County writers. Gallery Theater is providing the required non-profit coverage of this grant but it is a Readers’ Group project.

The most important thing to playwrights’ work is hearing the dialogue as it is being developed and receiving feedback. Impact funding will allow printing of sufficient scripts for one or more readings of each new play and a culminating workshop by a professional dramaturg. An initial well advanced musical theatre piece has had a first reading, but others included in the project may be at earlier stages that will “progress” during the course of the project.

Stage One

A reading will take place with the Readers Group, which can include the playwright's own readers. Feedback will be given.

Stage Two

A second reading with feedback by the Readers Group.

Stage Three

Meet with a dramaturg for a set number of hours.

About 99 Gals

99 Gals is a growing community of women philanthropists who pool their funds and resources to award yearly impact Grants to Yamhill County non-profit organizations. Administered by the Give A Little Foundation, 99 Gals has four Focus Groups that, beyond contributing financial gifts, also directly identify and mentor projects that reach beyond the usual scope of services and participants of the eligible organization. The Focus Groups are: Children, Education and Schools; Arts, Music, and Culture; Senior Citizen Welfare; and Women’s Health.

99 Gals does not fund individuals at this time, but each organization receiving an impact Grant may provide funding to individuals as part of their project. In most cases, awards are less than $5,000 and restricted to Yamhill County.
